Problem

A service station in Northern NSW was constructed in a region of low-lying plains on what was originally swampy ground.

Unanticipated environmental factors, as well as the capacity of the fuel tanks installed, led to a 50mm deformation developing in the forecourt pavement, which periodically filled with water, creating ponding and posing safety and operational risks to the area.

Solution

Re-levelling of the forecourt was undertaken via a targeted Teretek® injection that included injection directly beneath the pavement slabs and deeper into the supporting soils while ensuring to stay well clear of the fuel tanks themselves.

Additional application considerations included the fuel tanks being fitted with sensors wired up to a control panel in the service station, meaning any interference from the injection works could result in inaccuracies in the station’s data, and several other in-ground services that needed to be avoided. Careful adjustments to the injection array and methodology ensured no disruption or damage to these services.

First, the Mainmark Ground Engineering team identified a test area, part of the forecourt, where they could test and confirm the intended methodology. Core samples revealed that the slab was 200mm thick, enabling the team to agree on a maximum ground penetration depth of 800mm to ensure an appropriate buffer between the treatment injection zone and the buried fuel tanks.

Two different Teretek® products were injected. The first was injected directly beneath the forecourt slabs to fill voids, re-establish slab-on-ground support, and raise the slabs back to correct drainage gradients. The second, a more expansive product, was injected into the supporting soils to improve the bearing capacity and long-term performance.

Result

Mainmark’s technicians efficiently executed the forecourt re-levelling, completing the project in three injection shifts.

Despite the complexity of the solution, the station’s daily operations remained largely unaffected, with minimal inconvenience to the public. The successful re-levelling mitigated safety and operational risks, ensuring the continued smooth functioning of the service station.
