Whether it’s power, water, gas, communications or sewer lines, identifying the precise location and condition of underground assets is essential before undertaking any ground works, both as a safety measure and to protect the asset from damage.
Often, this information is not available due to old infrastructure not being mapped correctly or detailed plans being lost or inaccessible.
In most cases, plans provided by an asset owner only indicate the presence of infrastructure within the vicinity of the project site and do not pinpoint the exact location.
Mainmark’s service location team can accurately locate underground assets and identify issues that need to be addressed on site by using state-of-the-art tools and technology. Under our Asset Preservation division, Mainmark regularly works with consultants, asset owners, asset managers and home owners to map and mark utility pipes and other underground structures before excavation or ground improvement works to help avoid significant hazards and major project delays. If needed, safe, non-destructive excavation to physically expose assets can also be carried out.
By mapping the location of services before the design phase of a commercial project, it can also help to solidify the design possibilities of a build and allows for a more accurate project budget to be developed.
As ground engineering specialists, the service location expertise Mainmark has developed over many years across the commercial, civil infrastructure, industrial, mining and residential sectors has contributed to the business now offering service location as a standalone service. Operating out of our Springvale facility in Melbourne, our highly skilled and trained team has Dial Before You Dig Certification and Telstra Accreditation, and is a member of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA). Mainmark’s service location work is undertaken in accordance with Australian Standard AS5488-2013 Classification of Subsurface Utility Information (SUI).
In addition to service location, Mainmark can assist with utility management throughout a project, and provide geotechnical support, and asset remediation or preservation services as required. Here are a few support services we offer:
- Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) testing
- Measuring the strength of soil in-situ, and the thickness and location of subsurface soil layers
- Penetrometer testing to identify soil stiffness and provide soil samples to be assessed for environmental contaminants.
- Concrete cutting and coring, to test the quality of the underlying soil
- Sonic drilling, suited for penetration of most formations for a highly undisturbed core sample
- Geoprobe small direct push drill rig, perfect for limited access applications
