The Re-levelling of St. George’s Church

For over 60 years, St. George Anglican Church has stood as a cornerstone of the East Ivanhoe community.

As a place of worship, gathering, and local heritage, its physical integrity is vital to its continued role in the lives of parishioners. However, in recent years, the building began showing signs of structural distress, most notably, significant cracking in its brickwork.

Concerns about the church’s structural condition grew over an 18-month period. In response, the parish established a dedicated building subcommittee in 2024 to investigate the issue. Detailed inspections, including soil testing, engineering assessments, and consultations with local councils, confirmed settlement issues affecting the building’s foundation. The church faced a crucial decision: how to restore structural integrity while minimising disruption to its daily activities. After reviewing various repair solutions, the committee selected resin injection using Teretek®, a modern alternative to traditional concrete underpinning. This solution was chosen for its precision, cost-effectiveness, and ability to be implemented with minimal intrusion.

Mainmark, a specialist in ground engineering, was engaged to carry out the work. Their team conducted thorough site investigations, uncovering significant variability in footing depths, ranging from shallow to deep concrete foundations. Using Teretek®, resin was strategically injected beneath the footings to lift and re-level the structure. Laser-level monitoring provided real-time feedback to ensure a controlled and uniform lift. The results were both immediate and measurable. Cracks visibly closed, and the building was re-levelled to restore its structural soundness. Most importantly, the process was completed with minimal interruption to church activities, preserving the community’s ability to continue using the space throughout the works. The successful remediation of St. George Anglican Church is a testament to the effectiveness of modern ground engineering techniques. By choosing resin injection, the parish safeguarded a vital community asset and demonstrated how heritage structures can be preserved through innovative and considerate engineering. This case highlights the importance of proactive maintenance and the value of choosing tailored, non-invasive solutions when dealing with ageing infrastructure. Through collaboration, technology, and respect for heritage, St. George Anglican Church now stands stronger, ready to continue its service to the East Ivanhoe community for decades to come.

“Mainmark excelled, showcasing technical excellence that required skilled planning and engineering. The intricate and robust work restored the 60-year-old building’s structural integrity to everyone’s satisfaction, even beyond expectations.” – Ted Smart, Church Warden
