Problem
As part of major upgrade works at a large wastewater treatment facility on the Gold Coast, Mainmark was engaged to deliver a targeted ground improvement program beneath a building housing critical pumping infrastructure. The project required a solution that could improve the bearing capacity of the underlying soils without the need for extensive excavation or disruption to the surrounding upgrade works.
The building supporting the pumping infrastructure required improved ground support to meet the project’s engineering requirements. The objective was to increase the minimum allowable bearing capacity of the soil beneath the structure to 350kPa.
Given the location of the works within an operational wastewater treatment facility, the methodology needed to be precise, controlled and suitable for use beneath an existing building footprint. Traditional excavation or replacement methods would have introduced greater complexity, disruption and potential delays to the broader upgrade program.
Solution
Mainmark utilised its Teretek® Resin Injection methodology to improve the ground conditions beneath the building.
Resin was injected below the footprint of the structure at depths of up to 5.5 metres, targeting the underlying soils to increase stiffness and improve bearing capacity.
The injection program was carried out in a controlled and staged sequence, allowing Mainmark to treat the required zones with accuracy while minimising disruption to the site.
As the resin expanded within the ground, it filled voids, compacted surrounding soils and improved the strength and stability of the treated ground. This approach provided a non-invasive alternative to traditional ground improvement methods and was well suited to the constraints of the existing building and live infrastructure environment
Result
Mainmark successfully completed the ground improvement program beneath the pumping infrastructure building, achieving the required increase in minimum allowable bearing capacity to 350kPa.
The use of Teretek® Resin Injection allowed the works to be completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to the broader wastewater treatment facility upgrade. By improving the performance of the ground beneath critical infrastructure, Mainmark helped support the long-term stability, reliability and serviceability of the upgraded facility.
