Diagonal or stepped cracks in external walls are one of the earliest and most visible signs of foundation movement. These cracks typically form near windows, corners, or door openings and indicate uneven settlement or sinking soil beneath the structure.

Cracks appearing in plasterboard or internal walls, especially those running diagonally or widening over time, are strong indicators of subsidence. These cracks often spread as the foundation continues to sink or shift.

If your floors feel tilted, bounce when walked on, or slope in one direction, this is a major sign of foundation settlement. Sloping floors occur when part of the house drops due to weakened or unstable ground.

When foundations sink, they distort the frame of the building, creating gaps around window frames, door jambs, skirting boards, and ceilings. These gaps widen over time and signal significant structural movement.

Doors or windows that jam, drag, or no longer open smoothly are classic signs of foundation distortion. As the home becomes uneven, the frames warp and no longer sit square.

Sunken driveways, patios, garage floors, or internal slab floors often indicate soil erosion, voiding, or subsurface settlement. When the slab drops, it’s a direct sign that the ground beneath has weakened or washed out.
