Mainmark, a specialist ground engineering contractor, are proud to announce that they have been awarded “Project of the Year’ in the up to £2 million category at the 2023 CN Specialist Awards for the engineering solution delivered on a project in London.
The CN Specialists Awards celebrate the UK’s best Specialist Contractors; now in their 19th year, the CN Specialists Awards are the only national awards that recognise the outstanding achievements of specialist contractors and highlight the inspirational businesses and work found across the industry.
Award entries were judged by an independent panel of more than 60 principal contractors and industry figures. The CN Specialists Awards jury commended Mainmark for its innovative approach to construction projects, strong emphasis on sustainability, and relentless commitment to delivering exceptional outcomes. The award-winning project not only met the client’s specific requirements but also set a new benchmark for excellence within the subcontractor industry. Judges said the product came across as innovative and the benefits achieved were extremely impressive. These included time, money and quality. The fact that at least half the residents were able to remain in their homes while the work was being undertaken was a decider in choosing this winner, alongside the fact that they were able to deliver the work in under three weeks.
The judging panel was particularly impressed with Mainmark’s subsidence solutions, which came across as an innovative alternatives to underpinning.
Two residential buildings in Barnet, London, suffered from subsidence and heave due to the expansion of unsettled London clay soil. Building A was stabilised using the traditional underpinning method. Building B suffered randomised distortion with a lift of 140mm on one side, which presented a challenge for conventional methods and potentially the use of a hydraulic jack. The globally successful JOG technology by Mainmark was used to re-level and stabilise the building with minimal damage to the existing structure.
The benefits achieved were impressive delivering a high-quality solution, saving time and money and quality. The project timeline and minimal disruption were the deciding factors in choosing Mainmark as the winner:
• JOG Computer Controlled Grouting, for ground stabilisation and level correction, helped to save the building from planned demolition and re-build
• Work completed in 17 days as opposed to the 9-months it took to pile Building A
• 96% of the 240 survey points monitored were outside the NHBC standard tolerance level standards
• The correction and re-levelling outcomes within pre-agreed levels to minimise structure damage
• A lift of 139mm was achieved at the maximum point
• Low impact solution without the need for excavation, further landscaping,
• No need to relocate occupants
Tom Kavanagh, General Manager of Mainmark UK, comments: “We’re thrilled with the award. This is great recognition of the benefits of using JOG technology instead of underpinning. Showcasing the passion, skill, and specialist efforts of our entire team. We take great pride in not just meeting but exceeding our client’s expectations.”
